@#THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET
The internet started in September 1969 as a project of the U.S
Department of Defence (U.S.A). The project was named ARPANET (Advanced Research
Projects Agency Network, a connection amongst four universities and other
connections of computer networks were then added later on. Then in 1987,
ARPANET changes to NSFNET, a backbone created by the National Science
Foundation (U.S.A) for National Research and Education Network, it represents
the birth of the internet. With the transformation of the internet from being a
private project of the Department of Defence to being national, it also meant
more vulnerability to the cyber criminals, in 1988 a worm attacks more than
6000 computers including those of the Department of Defence.
Then in 1989, World Wide Web (WWW or “the web”) is developed at
CERN and changed things around by introducing a graphical interface to the
largely text-based Internet...using hypermedia, documents could now include
audio, video, images and others. This signifies the birth of the internet as we
now know it. The web meant amongst other things, more information, less
geographical boundaries, more collaboration opportunities and simple accessible
communication technologies. 1995 Microsoft releases the first version of
internet explorer, 1996 Yahoo goes public, 2005 Youtube is launched, 2009 the
number of internet users grows by billion every month, 2010 Facebook users
exceeds 500 million!!!
I also know from personal experience that the internet has
turned out be a major part of our lives today, so much that we’ve managed to
completely overlook some of the dangers that it poses...the fact that there’s
neither rules, regulations nor transparency policies means that we’re
constantly exposed to cyber criminals, especially on social networks. Cyber
crooks are so sophisticated that you would not suspect them and they always
gather their information from things that we take lightly. Below we have a few
tips on how to protect your personal information on social networks.
1.
Always use privacy controls offered by the site you’re using.
2. Use passwords that mix
upper and lowercase letters with numbers and symbols.
3. Do not post your real
personal phone number and address.
4. Do not post children’s
names, even in photo tags and captions.
5. Do not be specific when
posting information about vacations and business trips.
6. Do not upload pictures of
you in front of your house where the address is visible.
7. Ensure that your internet
security software is always updated to avoid hackers.
